A semi-autonomous region located in the African country of Tanzania, Zanzibar comprises the large islands of Unguja and Pemba, as well as many smaller islands. The island of 'Unguja' is also referred to as 'Zanzibar' informally and houses the capital, known as 'Zanzibar City'. While getting around in this archipelagic region of Tanzania, you'll come across several gorgeous islands and beaches that allow you to relax amidst enchanting natural surroundings. It only takes about 20 minutes of travel by air from the Tanzanian city, Dar es Salaam, to reach this island destination. Stone Town is a historic centre in Zanzibar City you must not miss while enjoying your Zanzibar holidays. This historic town is home to more than 15,000 residents and has several narrow streets that are lined with art galleries, cafes, craft shops, and stalls selling fabrics. You can explore the entire town on foot. Taking a stroll in this wonderful maze of streets would give you the chance to have a variety of cultural experiences. This part of Zanzibar has been declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site owing to its old architecture having Arab, Indian, and European influences.

A fantastic building you must visit while exploring Stone Town is the 'House of Wonders'. It is the tallest and the largest building in the town and is located at a place that faces the renowned Forodhani Gardens. It is among the several palaces that were built by the second Sultan of Zanzibar, known as Barghash bin Said. Constructed in the late 19th century, it was intended as a palace for hosting ceremonies and official receptions. The name of this building comes from the fact that it was the first to have electricity in Zanzibar. While on your visit to this museum, you'll find traditional ships, Swahili fishing tools, portraits of Sultans, and old furniture.

You'll also have a great time visiting the Forodhani Gardens, which is also known as Jubilee Gardens. It is a small park located in the historic Stone Town along the main sea-walk. This park is right in front of two famous buildings of the town, namely the Old Fort and the House of Wonders. It gets busier at dusk when both locals and tourists arrive at the main square to relish the delicious Swahili and Zanzibari dishes in a popular food street market.

Located a short drive away from Stone Town are the two famous beaches of Nungwi and Kendwa. You'll find a vast stretch of golden sands upon getting to the Nungwi Beach, which was included in CNN's list of the world's best beaches in 2014. Along the waterfront, you'll come across many restaurants, cafes, bars, and massage parlours. You'll also have a range of activities worth indulging in during your visit to this beach, such as scuba diving, jet-skiing, and para-gliding. Kendwa Beach is relatively quieter when compared to Nungwi, which makes it an ideal place to relax and savour the serenity.
