The disassembled statue was carried to New York City in the year 1885 in the French steamer known as Isere. About 200,000 people had lined the docks to welcome the steamer along with hundreds of boats. Reassembly of the statue began after the completion of the pedestal in 1886. President Grover Cleveland had presided over the ceremony of dedication of this statue with a parade held in the morning. The event was watched by nearly a million people.

Although Liberty Island reopened towards the end of 2001, the pedestal could only be reopened in 2004 and Statue of Liberty in 2012. The long period of time taken for reopening of the statue to the public was mainly owing to the installation of new elevators, staircases, and other facilities. Besides getting closer to the statue, it can also be viewed from a distance by getting to Battery Park, which is located on Manhattan's southern tip.
